The Bloomington Chamber Singers provides a rare opportunity for amateur singers to regularly perform major choral/orchestral works and to benefit from the guidance of a professional conductor. Members are accepted to the group during auditions, held twice yearly, and represent a cross-section of a community that includes Monroe and surrounding counties. The singers, ranging from students to retirees, share a consistently high level of musicianship and deep commitment to the pursuit of excellence. This common bond is evident in the close friendships, strong sense of community, and pride in the group that mark rehearsals and other activities.
BCS has always been member-driven, relying on its members to do the significant amount of work to maintain the organization. Yearly dues, paid by members or supplied by a scholarship program, allow each participant to invest in the group’s future and to contribute to the workings of the corporation. Over the thirty-some years of its existence, BCS has been musical home to hundreds of singers. The longevity of those currently in the group and the very low turnover rate underscore the important role of the chorus in enriching its members’ lives.
BCS is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors, elected by the members at the annual corporation meeting in May. The Corporation By-laws, adopted in 1980 and revised in 1993, allow for both non-singers and singers to serve.
In addition to musicians and board members, valued partners in the organization include a list of generous donors that have long supported the group through gifts, grants, and advertising revenue. Donor support accounts for nearly half of each year’s operating budget.
There are at present three paid positions with the BCS: Music Director, Accompanist, and Assistant to the Music Director. The Assistant position is half-subsidized annually by an anonymous donor.
