FAQ:
What should you sing in your audition?
Bring anything you think that shows the best of your vocal ability! It could be something classical, something more popular, or even a church hymn. Please bring a copy of your music for our pianist. We will also do a few vocal exercises to asses your vocal range, as well as a little bit of sight singing. If you have any questions about the audition process, please send an email to the Artistic Director at calopes@iu.edu.
What voice types is the group looking for?
We have open seats in all sections - Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass.
When do we rehearse?
Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 7:00–9:30 p.m., from September through May.
Where do we rehearse?
We rehearse at St. Thomas Lutheran Church on East Third Street in Bloomington.
What do we sing?
While Bloomington Chamber Singers is known for performances of major works from the choral-orchestral repertoire, we are equally committed to exploring music from a wide range of styles, traditions, and cultures. Recent performances have included Duruflé's Requiem, Handel's Messiah, Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Romancero Gitano, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Brazilian folk and traditional music, and Mexican boleros.
Our upcoming season features music ranging from Bach motets to jazz-inspired arrangements of The Beatles, Queen, and The Swingle Singers. The season also includes traditional spirituals, Nunes Garcia's Requiem, and Jocelyn Hagen's multimedia work The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci.

Under the direction of Caio Lopes, we are dedicated to artistic excellence while creating meaningful musical experiences that connect with audiences of all backgrounds - including those who may be new to choral or classical music.

Meet Caio Lopes, our new Artistic Director
Caio Lopes is a Brazilian conductor based in Indianapolis, Indiana. He current serves as Artistic Director for the Bloomington Chamber Singers, Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of Indianapolis, Chorus Master for the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, and Music Director at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. Before coming to the U.S., Caio worked as a choral director and voice teacher at Guri Santa Marcelina in his home state of São Paulo. In addition to his work with choirs, Caio has extensive experience in musical theater, serving as music director for numerous Broadway workshop titles at Casa de Artes OperÁria, and as a pianist for professional productions.
In opera, Caio worked as a pianist and coach at the opera academy at Theatro São Pedro and as assistant music director for the São Paulo State University opera studio during his undergraduate studies. Caio was one of four conductors selected as an active participant in the 2023 American Choral Directors Association National Masterclass, as well as the 2023 National Collegiate Choral Organization National Masterclasses. Caio is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Music degree at the Jacobs School of Music, where he also received his Master of Music in choral conducting. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in conducting from São Paulo State University in Brazil.

beethoven 9
We are excited to close our 2025/2026 season with a collaboration alongside the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, Voces Novae, and the Unitarian Universalist Church Choir. Together, our ensembles will bring Beethoven’s 9th Symphony to life on the iconic stage of the Musical Arts Center at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of music and community!

BRAZILIAN SACRED SOUNDS
Join us for the opening concert of our 2025–2026 season, featuring Brazilian music. Blending contemporary, traditional, and folk elements, this program explores the rich sonorities of Brazilian sacred music - from Umbanda to Christian traditions -and includes Guanais’ Missa de Alcaçus.

MESSIAH SING
Our traditional Messiah Sing returns for another year of joyful community singing! Bring your own score - or borrow one of ours -and join us in singing Handel’s masterpiece, accompanied by a live orchestra!

Guitar, Boleros, Y Amor
Our ensemble presents Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s choral gem Romancero Gitano, alongside other Spanish language works. We invite our audience to enjoy and celebrate the colorful soundscape of choral and guitar music.

Duruflé’s requiem
The Bloomington Chamber Singers present one of the 20th century’s great choral masterpieces: Maurice Duruflé’s transcendent Requiem. Combining Gregorian chant with lush modern harmonies, this meditative and powerful work will be heard in its original chamber-orchestral version, revealing its intimate and colorful soundscape.
